Traditionally a Ploughman’s is a cold meal based around bread, cheese, and onions. It dates back for centuries, with references being found as far back as the 1300’s.

A ploughman’s meal generally consisted of bread, cheese and beer, and although usually carried with the ploughman to the field, they could also buy “bread and cheese” at public houses, to add to the beer they would inevitably have with their lunch.

Nutritional Benefits

Cheese, supplemented with a little lard or butter, was the main source of fat and protein for the average labourer. With expensive seasonings hard to come by, onions were the favoured condiment, as well as providing valuable vitamin C. Although simple, the lunch was filling and sustainable.

It was very common to rely on cheese as the main source of protein rather than meat, especially in the south of the country.

Modern Marketing

A diet generally associated with rural poverty, it started to gain associations with more idealised images of rural life as time went on.

The Ploughman’s as we know it has only been marketed as such since the 1950’s, when the Cheese Board started promoting it in pubs to increase the sales of cheese.

The Bakehouse Ploughman’s

Here at the Bakehouse, we have tried to keep our Ploughman’s Lunch traditional, and yet indulgent. A far cry from the lunches of field labourers of old!

Our box contains all the trimmings for a hearty lunch for 2 people.

Containing six generous chunks of our trio of cheeses – Mature Cheddar, Stilton, and Brie – enough for two to share without arguing about who gets how much! It also has two freshly baked bread rolls, with butter, plus the traditional pickled onions. While grapes, coleslaw, and chutney aren’t necessarily what the ploughmen used to take to the fields with them, we feel it complements the rest of the lunch perfectly, along with a large freshly made salad.

If you fancy breaking away from the traditional cheese Ploughman’s, we also offer a Mixed Ploughman’s. Containing one portion of each of the three cheeses, plus a generous portion of our locally sourced gammon, there is plenty for two to share. We also have options to add extra portions of gammon, beef or trio of cheeses, so you can customise your lunch exactly how you’d like it!

With free home delivery to all of Hayling Island, we feel the ploughmen of old would have loved our packaged lunch! In a sturdy Vegware compostable box, this is the perfect lunch to take on a picnic or day out, or even just to enjoy with family in the garden.

If you think you’ll still have room at the end of your meal, why not finish off with one of our freshly baked scones, with cream and jam!
